She overcome everything that was meant to destroy her.....
I used to receive a variety of phone calls every year regarding admission to veterinary colleges. A hundred texts are chimes my notifications asking a variety of questions, seeking help for understanding what I am doing and how they can join the veterinary college and looking for a hope that what would be the scope of veterinary medicine in India and abroad. Sometimes it irritates me to reply with the same answer with the same energy and optimism. Some lacunae are still present in the field, although veterinary medicine is not an exceptional case of those lacunae. Each field has its pros and cons.
I have answered almost all questions which I had encountered in the last one and a half years while guiding the student for choosing veterinary medicine as a career. But one consistent question gives me a thoughtful insight that is whether veterinary medicine is safe for the girls, do girl joins veterinary medicine, do they are able to handle large animals, do they are able to find a good job with a safe working environment or the last most important question is how they can convince their parents for joining the veterinary medicine as a career.
I used to tell as many as possible points to the girls, sometimes even I used to say to them I can interact with your parents as well if they want a satisfactory answer. But most of the girls are afraid of that thing. But they keep on trying to convince their parents with a long-lasting battle at their home for joining veterinary medicine. The thing is why such types of problems are arising in society.
Girls are joining the veterinary medicine field although the number is still lagging in many states quite good in many others. But what is the main reason why we are not able to create mass awareness among the society for changing the perception of parents or family with respect to veterinary medicine? What are loopholes in the field which are making people think in a state of paralysis? Many questions are not answered yet by many prospects.
My Story...
Last year when I received around 700+ phone calls for admission in veterinary or medical science. I was very much clear about what I wanted to share with students, how the students are thinking about the admission process after NEET, and what students are looking forward to choosing a career. I was associated with a start-up where I was managing a group of 12 thousand members on telegram and 1000 members on WhatsApp. Being in constant touch with the veterinary aspirants and those who are doing their BVSc was a normal thing for me. I used to consult various students through Quora, Linkedin, Phone calls and other social media platforms. But the constant queries made me think twice about the situation of women empowerment in India. I just forgot India but I see clearly a lack of women empowerment in veterinary science for the girl's students who want to pursue BVSc.
Parents of most female students are not willing to let their daughter for securing a seat in veterinary science. I received around 15 phone calls from female students who are very willing to join the veterinary, they are mentally prepared and have enthusiasm for the course but the major challenge for them is to convince their parents. They just throw a direct question to me about how to convince their parents that veterinary is safe for girls. This made me more threatened than how does profession judge the safety of a girl. What kind of picture we are building in a society of safety for girls? Is treating animals in rural areas is unsafe? If so I think a woman working in a bank located in a rural school or bank is equally unsafe. These society standards are double-handed and judge the profession on the basis of the ability of women to treat the animals. I then told those girls that there are various ways to serve in veterinary despite the field job, although this thing is unacceptable for a veterinarian to run away from his duties. Those girls joined the veterinary science and I am happy they are doing very well at their colleges. But then I understand what makes the veterinary unsafe for girls. Those girls have the moral duties to engage more students like them and convince their parents to get the admission. Sharing their experiences become a key step to engage more girls students in veterinary science.
The recent admissions trend in master's and PhD admissions at IVRI shows a great increase in strength of female students around 55-60% girls students are admitted in year 2021-2022, showing their intellectual fighting amongst the boys for securing the seats in the prestigious veterinary science institutes. The colleges like Pantnagar have more female students enrolled in bvsc. Such figures need to be shared publicly so we can encourage the aspiring female veterinary aspirants.
